"I Left My Heart in San Francisco!"

What an adventure! The CSLA Conference proved to be invigorating with many opportunities to network and grow professionally. This year celebrated the 100^th anniversary of the association. Delaine Eastin, Chair of Assembly Education Chair, and a strong advocate of school library program, shared her story of Miss Firth, a Teacher-Librarian, who instilled in her the wonderment of books and learning.  A commemorative photo of the membership followed with a champagne toast and cake of course! 

As mentioned, in my last post, I had a wonderful opportunity to present:

•       A Journey into Inquiry: Using Children’s Books to Teach Science Concepts

The focus of the workshops was authentic, experiential learning, creativity, collaboration and critical thinking facilitated by Web 2.0 Tools and Apps.

Two new workshops developed will detail the "process of inquiry" while staying true to the concept of Dollar Daze and Thrifty Finds. This means utilizing inexpensive and readily available resources to promote literacy and research, in addition to using Web 2.0 Tools and Apps to facilitate and demonstrate new learning.

A Journey into Inquiry: 
Using Children's Books to Teach Science Concepts                                                                                      

Children’s books will be used as a catalyst to address core science ideas, cross-cutting concepts, literacy, and inquiry in a meaningful way. A variety of activities will be deconstructed to analyze how science concepts, literacy and inquiry can be successfully integrated to teach for understanding.

Post Cards from the Edge: 
Learning and Memories in Small Bites                                                                                                    

In this workshop postcards serve as a starting point for a number of activities that focus on inquiry and learning. Activities will address:

•  writing and critical thinking
•  personal and cultural connections
• science and geography
• point of view
• exit cards/reflection/metacognition
•  design and media analysis
• art using instagram prints/collage maker
